DAY 3 : Page 1

The Pictures

As mentioned on D2P2 we were slated to attack Rock Pile 2 on day 3, AM. While hiking the mile or so to the pile we encountered some hikers who reiterated the secret for getting through this; 'find the hole to go under the rocks'. This hole was supposed to be right in the middle of the trail. While Dale and I stopped occasionally to take pictures, Dick and Lisa charged ahead and found the passage. As Dale and I approached the boulders, Lisa's head emerged from the bottom of the canyon telling us to follow her through the hole in the ground. This hole is apparently a path worn by water through the upper deposits of the canyon floor, which is built up due to the blockage of the boulders, to the lower canyon floor just beyond. The drop is about 7-8 feet, and rendered difficult due to the darkness of the area in the hole compared to canyon light, and the foot and hand holds down below. Fortunately Dick and Lisa had scoped it out pretty well, and directed Dale and I down through the passage without incident. One picture was taken of this event, but was lost due to a camera misfunction. I intend to recapture this next year for the scrapbook.

Rock Fall 2

Rock Fall Coming !!

Many of the best pictures ocurred in the section of the canyon that follows, and some of the pictures presented here occured on Day 2. They are grouped here so those interested strictly in the canyon pictures can go immediately to the pages in this day to see the dramatic effects of the canyon art. Three aspects of the pictures make each one a bit unique: wall texture, lighting, and colors. Enjoy.

Haunted Cavern

Haunted Cavern

This picture is unusual for its lack of color, but the lighting is unusual and makes this look like an eerie canal down some forbidding street.

Rainbow rocks

In other pictures there are many colors; more on the picture than was visible at the time. What actually appears on film depends on the sensitivity of the particular film, and the lighting available. Some of these colors suprised even the photographers when the finished proofs were viewed. The rough size of this formation can be seen by a small part of a hiker at the bottom.
